Alberto Caeiro Sees Collegiate Jesus
After Pessoa

I’m bored with thanking
my father, who craves praise

24/7, never gets enough
approval, turns on the sun

and expects me to say,
“Wow, dad, that’s great!”

though he’s done it
for millennia. He fears

everyone’s hungry
for a substitute, fierce

anger exploding from low
self-esteem. In Psychology 355,

I learned about compensation.
I’ll come to no good, end up

in pictures. At twenty, I’m no prince,
certainly not of peace–too many

fast rivers in me. Love me—
watch the undertow.

Kenneth Pobo does a radio show on an all-streaming format on Saturdays at He gardens in his free time.
