Cody Wilson

Turkey Sandwich

Shred the breasts
in my hands.

Fatty straits embellish
themselves,

little pearls for
teeth to recant

and awe away
from, spit back,

gnawed from mouths
like loose teeth

with stubborn fingers.
The jaw’s repose.

What a delicacy it is,
the butcher knows,

to split fat from bone.

Cody Wilson teaches in Peoria, Arizona. He once shot out a street light with a BB gun and then immediately called to report an outage. His work has been published. Once a teacher stole his title, but unlike the city’s streetlight department, he’s not as forgiving as he’d like to be.
